About The Program
Program History »
The Program commenced in 1993 with limited admissions of 15-20 new students each year for the initial years. The number of new students admitted each year has grown as has the scope of the program.
Program Aim »
The purpose of the program is to prepare local and overseas candidates for work in the broad area of international and domestic aid, including refugee and immigrant resettlement.
The program is designed for people from a range of professional backgrounds: teachers, social workers, medical personnel, economists, engineers, agricultural scientists, journalists and managers. The program complements their professional expertise with a knowledge base and analytic framework to understand and negotiate the complexities of the geopolitical, economic, social and cultural contexts in which social development takes place.
By the end of the course candidates can expect to have substantive knowledge and a range of skills related to the planning, delivery and evaluation of social development programs.
Program Objectives »
The Social Development program provides postgraduate qualifications in social and community development using adult education approaches. Advanced social development theory and practice core courses are offered with elective courses relevant to the program plan chosen.
Students will graduate as well qualified professionals in social and community development with an understanding and critical analysis of, and skills, relevant to the chosen social development setting.
Program Philosophy »
The program is founded in a Human Rights framework, a Social Justice philosophy and a Community Development approach. It offers a balance of theory and practice in the three fields of study.
